Preparing Your HVAC For Fall And Winter
Winters can be overwhelming.
As soon as the first snowfall hits the ground, the last problem you want to learn about is your HVAC system having issues that could have been solved earlier.
Everybody knows that regular and proper maintenance is vital to keep all machines in proper running conditions.
Your home’s HVAC system is no different.
Outdoor Steps You Can Take To Be Ready For Colder Weather
If you are unsure how to prepare your HVAC system for the fall and the upcoming winter season, here is our recommended checklist for preparing your HVAC system for fall and winter.
Autumn Outdoor Unit Preparations
- Clear all the debris gathered around your HVAC’s condenser coil like fallen leaves, sticks, shrubs, grass, etc.
- Clean all debris from the exhaust vents and ensure that the vents would not get entirely covered in the mulch or snow later on.
- Properly wash the outdoor coil with the help of the garden hose to remove all debris.
- If you need to cover the outdoor unit of your HVAC, ensure that you invest in good quality covers to prevent falling leaves and other debris on the unit. However, you must remember not to cover your HVAC outdoor unit entirely, as these machines are designed to withstand all weather.
Autumn Indoor Unit Preparations
- Consider replacing your indoor air filter before the cold season arrives. (If the air filter is 4″, it should be replaced every four months, while the 1″ one should be replaced every month).
- This is optional, but you can also change the humidity pad, if applicable.
- Reset your thermostat to a new temperature setting for the colder season. If you have a programmable thermostat, reprogram it for the new upcoming season. This will also save you from higher electric bills.
- It is best to install a programmable thermostat in your house. It will operate at the desired temperature while you are not home and set a comfortable temperature before you wake up. Make sure you program your thermostat correctly for the latter.
- Check all connections for indoor coil drains.
- Clean the air vents on the floor and ceiling.
- Have a detailed inspection of your home for any air gaps in the doors or windows causing energy loss. Repair the latter before the colder season arrives.
- Reverse your ceiling fans’ directions to the opposite to make the warmer air flow downwards from the ceiling.
- Switch on your furnace at least two to three times before winter arrives to ensure everything is operating perfectly.
Colder Weather Can Be A Snap With A Few Simple Steps And Routine Maintenance
You should check your HVAC system by a professional twice a year to detect any potential issues that might cause the system to not work properly according to the upcoming seasons.
An HVAC professional will correctly inspect the filters, electric supplies, contacts, motors, belts, refrigerant levels, gas pressure, and other safety switches.
Finding early about these problems will benefit you in the long run, as having your HVAC system disturbed or stopped working during the winter is no fun.
Therefore, it is essential to take all preventive measures and prepare your HVAC system in advance for the upcoming fall and winter seasons.
